Town Guard Ranks

Guardsman Recruit (not used)

When the guard was much bigger, every guard was first given training. While in training, they were Guardsmen Recruits. Now, however, they’re short-handed enough to take whoever they can get. May sleep/eat in barracks for 2 cp/day, but are otherwise at the Destitute standard of living.

Rank Insignia: None
Form of Address: Recruit
Wages: 5 cp/day

Guardsman

The basic rank. The Guardsman’s duties are to keep the peace in Syracuse, report and/or prevent suspicious/illegal activity, as well as following orders given. May live/eat in barracks for 2 gp/month at Poor standard of living.

Rank Insignia: Tabard
Form of Address: Guard
Wages: 2 sp/day

Guardsman-in-Charge

A half-promotion. Guardsmen-in-charge are most often situational. If arises where a group of guards needs a clear leader, but there are no corporals or sergeants in the group, one of the guardsmen may be designated as guardsman-in-charge. Their authority rarely extends past the specific situation, at which point they revert back to guardsman.

Rank Insignia: Tabard
Form of Address: Guard, Guard-in-Charge, Guardsman-in-Charge, “Who the fuck is in charge of you idiots?” (superiors only)
Wages: 2 sp/day

Corporal

A corporal is assigned a squad of guards. The size of these squads varies, but typically is between four (a corporal and three guardsmen) and twelve (a corporal and eleven guardsmen). A corporal only has direct authority over his squad, but may assume authority over other squads in dire circumstances if that squad’s corporal is unavailable or that squad is led by a guardsman-in-charge. Corporals are considered NCOs and may live in the barracks for 15 sp/month at the Poor standard of living.

Currently, about half the guard squads are led by corporals and half by guardsmen-in-charge.

Rank Insignia: Tabard, Distinctive leather cap (not currently used)
Form of Address: Corporal, Runny (informal)
Wages: 3 sp/day.

Sergeant

A sergeant may command a group of squads, or may be an administrative NCO. While they normally only have authority over corporals and guards in their chain of command, in dire circumstances they may assume authority over other squads in the absence of their sergeant. That’s the theory. In practice, if a sergeant tells you to do something, you do it.

Sergeants may live in the barracks for 1 gp/month at the Poor standard of living, or 7 gp/month at the Average standard of living.

There are currently 3 sergeants: Sergeant Uwayvesyer, Day Shift Chief; Sergeant S’dynlor, Night Shift Chief; and Sergeant Bruperhat, Quartermaster.

Rank Insignia: Tabard, Distinctive leather cap (not currently used), Studded leather armor (not currently used)
Form of Address: Sergeant
Wages: 5 sp/day

Lieutenant

The lieutenant is third-in-command of the Syracuse Guard, answering only to the captain and the King’s Reeve. A lieutenant may live in the barracks for 9 gp/month at the Average standard of living or for free at the Poor standard of living.

There is currently no lieutenant of the Syracuse Guard.

Rank Insignia: Tabard, Personal armor.
Form of Address: Lieutenant, Sir
Wages: 1 gp/day

Captain

The captain is second-in-command of the Syracuse Guard, answerable only to the King’s Reeve, and is the day-to-day commander. A captain may live in the barracks for 7 gp/month at the Average standard of living or for free at the Poor standard of living.

Jon Presbyter currently holds this position.

Rank Insignia: Tabard, Personal armor.
Form of Address: Captain, Sir
Wages: variable

The King’s Reeve

Speaking for the King in Syracuse-of-Themis and the surrounding lands, the King’s Reeve is the ultimate authority in all matters, including those of the guard.

Berejon Fudkin is currently the King’s Reeve.

Rank Insignia: None official
Form of Address: Reeve (informal), The King’s Reeve, My Lord, Your Lordship
